The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), the trade body representing the world’s national shipowner associations, launched its e-learning Academy, which shipowners say will have “positive impact on crews and shipping companies worldwide.”
“As the shipping industry faces increasing regulatory challenges and safety demands, this initiative is a vital resource for companies looking to stay ahead in compliance and operational excellence,” said the Cyprus Shipping Chamber.
The Chamber said it supports ICS efforts in advancing the professional development of seafarers and strengthening the global maritime community’s commitment to safety, sustainability, and regulatory compliance on board.
The ICS Academy provides on-the-go access to practical e-learning to help shipping companies ensure best practices and regulatory compliance on board.
Developed by seafarers, for seafarers, and drawing on the collective experience of more than 80% of the world’s shipping fleet, ICS Academy courses complement ICS Publications, giving crew access to on board procedures and training that work together seamlessly.
Globally applicable to all ship types, and regularly updated to meet the changing needs of the shipping industry, ICS said that the e-learning platform also “provides a time-efficient learning experience and flexibility for crew to study at their own pace. Interactive content enables seafarers to apply practical guidance to real-life scenarios on board, and the latest learning techniques are used to help learners retain knowledge.”
Certificates are issued for every course a learner completes and are accessible at any time on the ICS learning management system.
The first e-learning course available during the platform’s launch is ‘Helicopter Operation Procedures for Ships’, which is based on the industry standard ‘Guide to Helicopter/Ship Operations’.
Using interactive content, scenarios and videos, this course helps ship’s crews involved in helicopter/ship operations become familiar with the important technical aspects of these complex operations and understand their roles in the task.
